WWE SmackDown is about to inherit a former NXT champion and major star from the yellow brand. It has been reported that Matt Riddle is to shift to the main roster in the coming weeks.

Dave Meltzer first reported on Wrestling Observer that a main roster call was imminent for Riddle. He states that other promotions would love to sign up the youngster so WWE had to move him up to keep him with the company.

“They had to bring him up though because he would have been able to go anywhere he wanted and there’s companies — AEW is spending money for talent they want, New Japan when they get going you know they’ll be looking at new guys, and Ring Of Honor has spent money on key guys and [Riddle] would be — if [ROH] gonna spend money for Bandido they’ll certainly spend big money for Matt Riddle.”

“He had a lot more places where he could make a lot more money than in NXT — everywhere pretty much. So they had to bring him up. The reality is they had to bring him to the main roster.”

PWInsider have now confirmed that it will be Friday Nights SmackDown show that Riddle is moved to.

Former WWE NXT Tag Team Champion Matt Riddle will soon be debuting for WWE’s Smackdown brand, PWInsider.com has confirmed with multiple sources.  There have been plans to move Riddle to the blue brand since before Wrestlemania 36 but they had been on pause coming out of that PPV.  Talk of the plans finally going into effect started making the rounds several weeks ago

The report notes that since before WrestleMania there were talks of moving Riddle to SmackDown, but plans were put on hold due to current circumstances within the company dude to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Coming up on this week’s episode of NXT, Riddle has a ‘cage fight’ match against Timothy Thatcher, for which Kurt Angle will serve as special guest referee. It has not been confirmed if this is Riddle’s last match for NXT but its definitely a possibility.
