In this article we take a look at the men in WWE who became a Triple Crown Champion but have yet to capture that final title necessary to become a Grand Slam Champion. As every Grand Slam Champion is already a Triple Crown Champion we have excluded them from this list as I can’t be arsed writing the same stuff again. In order to become a Triple Crown Champion the wrestler must have won a World Title, a Tag Team Title and the Intercontinental Title. Below are the remaining 14 men and 1 woman who have earned the title of being a Triple Crown Champion.

Pedro Morales

Pedro Morales is the 1st Triple Crown Champion in WWE history. He began this journey by winning the WWWF Heavyweight Championship from Ivan Koloff at a house show on January 18th 1971 making him the 4th ever WWE Champion. Morales would hold the belt for 1027 days before dropping the title to Stan Stasiak in December 1973. Morales would team with Bob Backlund to face The Wild Samoans at the Showdown at Shea event on August 9th 1980 in a 2 out of 3 falls match winning the WWF Tag Team Championships 2-0 up. They would vacate the titles a day later as Backlund was already the WWF Champion. He defeated Ken Patera at a house show on December 8th 1980 to win his first Intercontinental Championship and take his final step to becoming the first ever Triple Crown Champion. Morales retired in 1987 by participating in his final match as part of a battle royal in November 1987. He did not win the European or Hardcore Championships preventing him from becoming a Grand Slam Champion. Morales passed away in February 2019

Fun Fact: Pedro Morales holds the distinction of being the 3rd Intercontinental Champion in history.

Bret Hart

Bret Hart should be a Grand Slam Champion but has fell victim to the rule change in 2015. He has won a world, tag, IC and US title but due to the rule change he would need to have won either a European or Hardcore Championship or win either the Raw or Smackdown Tag Team Championship. Bret Hart and Jim the Anvil Neidhart challenged for the WWF Tag Team Championships as the Hart Foundation on the January 26th 1987 edition of Superstars. They would defeat the British Bulldogs with some favourable refereeing from Danny Davis to win their first championships in the WWF. Bret Hart would win the Intercontinental Championship from Mr Perfect at Summerslam 1991. Bret would go on to win the WWF Championship at a house show on October 12th 1992 from Ric Flair while they were in Saskatchewan, Canada to become a Triple Crown Champion. Bret Hart left WWE for WCW after the infamous Montreal Screwjob at Survivor Series in 1997. He would wrestle in WCW for a couple of years before being injured by Goldberg forcing him into retirement. Hart would not return to the WWE full time until 2009 where he would feud with Vince McMahon, become the Raw General Manager and also defeat The Miz to become the United States Champion. He would leave WWE again in 2010 but returns sporadically and has made appearances on AEW.

Fun Fact: Bret has been screwing Bret since he was a teenager.

Big Daddy Cool Diesel began his journey to becoming a Triple Crown Champion when he won the Intercontinental Championship from The Bad Guy Razor Ramon on the April 13th 1994 episode of Superstars. He would go on to form a tag team with Shawn Michaels to capture his first Tag Team Championship from the Headshrinkers on the August 28th 1994 house show just before Summerslam. Diesel would finish out a good year in 1994 by winning the WWF Championship from Bob Backlund in a squash match at a house show on November 26th 1994. Diesel would go on to hold the belt 358 days before dropping the belt to Bret Hart at Survivor Series 1995. Diesel would leave WWE with Scott Hall to form the Outsiders and eventually nWo in WCW. Nash would return to WWE in the early 2000s before leaving again to join TNA. He later returned to WWE attacking CM Punk as he received a text telling him to do so that he claimed Triple H sent him but later revealed that he texted it to himself. He would have his last match in WWE in a ladder match for a sledgehammer with Triple H in 2011 before leaving again. He has since appeared sporadically in WWE popping up at reunion events and special episodes of Raw. Nash did not win the European, Hardcore or US Championship during his career with WWE

Fun Fact: Fake Diesel is more successful than Real Diesel

Stone Cold Steve Austin

Stone Cold Steve Austin (who was once almost names Fang McFrost) would become one of the greatest wrestlers in WWE history. Austin took his first step to becoming a Triple Crown Champion when he teamed with Shawn Michaels to face Owen Hart and the British Bulldog on the May 26th 1997 edition of Raw is War. They would win the WWF Tag Team Champions but the titles would be vacated a few months later after Michaels got into a backstage altercation with Bret Hart. Austin would defeat Owen Hart at Summerslam 1997 to win his first Intercontinental Championship. This was the same match that saw Owen perform a Sitout Tombstone Piledriver on Austin that had Austin land on his head knocking him out and injuring his neck, and Austin still won the match. Stone Cold Steve Austin would win the 1998 Royal Rumble giving him a WWF Championship opportunity at Wrestlemania XIV against Shawn Michaels. This match was even more stacked due to Mike Tyson being the Special outside enforcer and seemingly having beef with Austin. Stone Cold would defeat Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania XIV after Tyson revealed he was aligned with Austin. Austin would not win the European or Hardcore Championships and would retire from in ring competition in 2002 but would stay on as the Sheriff of Raw feuding with Bischoff. Austin was not allowed to put his hands on anyone unless he was provoked leading to the occasional stunner. Austin would for a team to take on Bischoffs team at Survivor Series 2003 in a losing effort meaning Austin would have to leave Raw. Austin has popped up in WWE over the years for special appearances and hosts the Stone Cold Podcast.

Fun Fact: Steve Austin was once run over by Rikishi. He did it for the Rock.

The Rock

The Rock then known as Rocky Maivia won his first Intercontinental Championship by beating Triple H on the February 13th 1997 edition of Raw. The WWF Championship was vacated on September 27th 1998 after both the Undertaker and Kane simultaneously pinned Stone Cold Steve Austin. This lead to the creation of the Deadly Games tournament which saw The Rock vs Mankind in the finals. The Rock would defeat Mankind in what would be a recreation of the infamous Montreal Screwjob to become WWF Champion for the first time at Survivor Series 1998. The Rock would win his first tag title alongside Mankind as they formed The Rock n Sock Connection. They would challenge the Unholy Alliance of Undertaker and The Big Show to win the WWF Tag Team Championship on the August 30th 1999 edition of Raw is War. They would lose the titles back to the Unholy Alliance just over a week later in a Buried Alive Match before claiming them back again defeating 4 members of the Unholy Alliance in a Dark Side Rules Match by pinning Mideon The Rock didn’t win the Hardcore European or US title during his careers but never say never to a quick return to win the US title to become a grand slam champion. Rock would leave WWE to pursue acting. After somewhat of a shaky start he is currently one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood. He has appeared sporadically since 2011 having matches with John Cena, CM Punk, Miz, R-Truth and he wrestled his (as of writing) last match at Wrestlemania 32, against Erick Rowan. What a way to go out.

Fun Fact: The Rock will be playing Danny DeVito’s character in Jumanji: The Next Level. I never knew how much I needed this until I heard of it.

Chris Benoit

Chris Benoit would win his first Intercontinental Championship at Wrestlemania 2000 in a 2 falls triple threat match for both the Intercontinental and European Championships being picked up from the first and second falls respectively. Kurt Angle walked in with both Championships but would lose the Intercontinental Championship to Chris Benoit and the European Championship to Chris Jericho. He and Kurt Angle would defeat Edge and Rey Mysterio at No Mercy 2002 to become the inaugural WWE Tag Team Champions. Chris Benoit would win the 2004 Royal Rumble match earning himself a title match in the Main Event of Wrestlemania XX. Benoit then a Smackdown Superstar jumped to Raw to challenge Triple H for the World Heavyweight Championship. This match would turn into a Triple Threat match including Shawn Michaels which saw Benoit beat Triple H via submission to win the World Heavyweight title for the first time in his career. Benoit would hold the title until Summerslam 2004 before dropping the belt to Randy Orton. Benoit didn’t win the European or Hardcore Championship, had he won either of these championships he would have become a Grand Slam Champion at Wrestlemania XX. Benoit won the US title in his career but didn’t win the WWE Championship so he could not be recognized as a Grand Slam Champion. Benoit would take his own life as well as his wife Nancy and son Daniels lives as well in 2007 when he was scheduled to become the ECW Champion.

Fun Fact: Redacted.

Ric Flair

Ric Flair is the only man in history to win the WWF Championship while it was vacant in a Royal Rumble match. Hulk Hogan had been stripped of the title by WWF President Jack Tunney and it was announced that the 1992 Royal Rumble match would be for the vacant title. Ric Flair entered at No. 3 and would last until the end with Hulk Hogan and Sid Justice. Sid would eliminate Hogan and Hogan would assist Flair to eliminate Sid thus leaving Flair in the ring as the new WWF Champion. Ric Flair and Batista represented Evolution at Armageddon in 2003 where they would compete in a tag team turmoil match featuring Robert Conway and Rene Dupree, Hurricane and Rosey, Mark Jindrak and Garrison Cade, Val Venis and Lance Storm, Test and Scott Steiner and the Dudley Boyz. Batista and Flair would beat the Dudley Boyz to pick up their first World Tag Team Championship. Ric Flair won his first Intercontinental Championship from Carlito Carribean Cool (never forget Carlitos full name at one point) at Unforgiven 2005. Flair did not win the Hardcore, European or United States Championships during his in ring career with WWE and therefore did not become a Grand Slam Champion. Flair would lose his career to Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania 24 in 2008 leaving WWE to compete in TNA for a few matches. Flair has returned to the WWE sporadically over the years at special episodes of Raw or Smackdown, reuniting with Evolution and managing Charlotte during the early stages of her WWE main roster career.

Fun Fact: Ric Flair once sexually assaulted Becky Lynch by forcibly kissing her at the Royal Rumble 2016

CM Punk

Chicago Made Punk would win the Money in the Bank contract at Wrestlemania 24. He would hold the briefcase for a few months before cashing in on Edge on the June 30th 2008 edition of Raw as Edge was bragging that he was taking the World Heavyweight title to Smackdown before being attacked by Batista. This was Punks first reign with the World Heavyweight Championship but he would have the title vacated from him as he was attacked by Legacy backstage at Unforgiven 2008 and rendered unable to defend his title in the Championship Scramble match. His replacement Chris Jericho would leave as champion. Charles Montgomery Punk won his first tag team championship when he teamed with Kofi Kingston to defeat Priceless (Cody Rhodes and Ted Dibiase) on the October 27th 2008 edition of Raw to win the World Tag Team Championship. They would hold the belts for just over a month before losing the titles to John Morrison and the Miz at a house show. Chick Magnet Punk won his first Intercontinental Championship from William Regal in a No Disqualification match on the January 19th 2009 edition of Raw. In order for CM Punk to become a Grand Slam Champion he would have to win the United States Championship but this would involve coming back to the WWE and this seems like it may never happen. Punk left WWE in 2014 and has since taken up other pursuits such as writing comics and fighting in the UFC as well as commentating on some fights and is currently appearing on the FOX show WWE Backstage.

Fun Fact: Phil Brookes A.K.A CM Punk was fired from WWE on his wedding day.

Dolph Ziggler

Dolph Ziggler should be a Grand Slam Champion but is unlucky due to the reclassification of Triple Crown and Grand Slam winners in 2015 which doesn’t recognise the World Heavyweight Championship as valid moving forward from then. Dolph would take his first step to becoming a Triple Crown winner by capturing the Intercontinental Championship from Kofi Kingston on the July 28th 2010 episode of Smackdown. Ziggler would go on to have 6 reigns with the Intercontinental Championship tying Jeff Jarrett and Rob Van Dam for the 3rd most reigns in WWE history behind the Miz with 8 and Chris Jericho with 9. Ziggler would go on to be awarded the World Heavyweight Championship on the February 15th 2011 edition of Smackdown as Edge had been stripped of the title from Vickie Guerrero for using the spear when it had been banned. Ziggler would lose the belt to Edge the same day. I wish his first reign was his Money in the Bank Cash In but unfortunately this is his first recognised reign and he would not hold the belt again for over 2 years. Ziggler is recognised as being a World Tag Team Champion as part of the Spirit Squad but Ziggler then known as NiIIIIICCCCKKKKKYYY didn’t hold the belt. The first time Dolph would win a tag title himself would be in 2018 when he would align himself with Drew McIntyre. They would go on to win the Raw Tag Team Championships by defeating The B-Team on the September 3rd 2018 edition of Raw. They would hold these titles for 49 days (one less day than The B-Teams run) before dropping the titles to Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose the same night that Roman announced he was suffering from Leukaemia. Ziggler would go on to win the United States Championship but he won this after the rule change so he is not currently recognised as a Grand Slam Champion. In order to become one Dolph has to win either the WWE or Universal Championship. Ziggler currently competes on the Smackdown brand and is involved with the Otis Mandy and Sonya storyline.

Fun Fact: Ziggler has gone through many jobs such as cheerleader, golf caddy and Shawn Michaels impersonator.

Johnny Gargano

The first of two men on this list to achieve the NXT Triple Crown. Gargano picked up his first title in WWE by defeating The Revival alongside his then tag team partner Tommaso Ciampa as a part of D.I.Y at NXT Takeover Toronto in 2016 to pick up the NXT Tag Team Championship. Gargano would go on to win the NXT North American Championship by pinning Ricochet at NXT Takeover Phoenix in 2019. And finally in a match that would decide who would not only become NXT Champion for the first time but also who would become the first NXT Triple Crown winner Johnny Gargano took on Adam Cole in an amazing match for the vacated title due to Ciampas injury. This match took place at NXT Takeover New York in 2019 seeing Gargano defeat Cole in a 2 out of 3 falls match in what will go down as an instant classic. While there is currently no NXT Grand Slam in theory Gargano would have to win either the Cruiserweight Championship or the UK Championship in theory. Gargano currently competes on the NXT brand.

Fun Fact: Johnny Gargano turned heel but you couldn’t tell due to the thunderous cheers from the crowd

Adam Cole

Adam Cole debuted in WWE on the NXT brand by jumping in the ring and attacking Drew McIntyre alongside Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly. They would debut in the form of the Undisputed Era and it wouldn’t be long before they would claim their first title. Adam Cole would win the 6 man ladder match that opened NXT Takeover New Orleans 2018 in what would be a 5 star match. This match was to determine the inaugural champion for the NXT North American Championship. Cole would scale the ladder to claim the title defeating Ricochet, EC3, Velveteen Dream, Lars Sullivan and Killian Dain in the process. Fish and O’Reilly won the NXT Tag Team Championships previously but it was unknown if this would be a title under the freebird rule. When Fish got injured in the lead up to NXT Takeover New Orleans it was decided that Adam Cole would defend the titles alongside O’Reilly in a Triple Threat match against the Authors of Pain and Pete Dunne and Roderick Strong. Strong would turn on his teammate joining the Undisputed Era and this would recognise Adam Cole as a NXT Tag Team Champion. As discussed in our previous entry Cole lost the 2 out of 3 falls match against Gargano to determine who would win the NXT Championship and become the first NXT Triple Crown. As Cole got the first fall of that match he claimed he should be NXT Champion as Gargano was only safe due to the stipulation leading to a rematch with only on fall. This main event match would take place at NXT Takeover XXV seeing Adam Cole pin Johnny Gargano in another amazing match that would see Adam Cole become the current NXT Champion and the second man to achieve the NXT Triple Crown. Adam Cole BAYBAY and the Undisputed Era currently compete on NXT with Cole as the NXT Champion.

Fun Fact: Adam Cole currently does not have a baby BAYBAY.

Alexa Bliss

Alexa Bliss is the second ever Women’s Triple Crown Champion having won the Raw Women’s, Smackdown Women’s and Women’s Tag Team Titles. Bliss debuted on the main Roster during the 2016 brand split where she would wrestle as a member of the Smackdown Roster. She would be unsuccessful in her first title match during a 6-pack challenge with Natalya, Nikki Bella, Carmellla, Naomi and the eventual winner Becky Lynch. She would go on to defeat Becky at TLC 2016 by putting her through a table and would hold onto the belt until dropping it to Naomi at Elimination Chamber 2017. After moving to Raw during the 2017 draft she faced Bayley for the Raw Women’s title at the Payback 2017 PPV which featured the infamous “this is your life” storyline. After winning the title a few times including a Money in the Bank win she would go on to form a team with Nikki Cross. They would successfully capture the Women’s Tag Team Championship on the August 5th 2019 episode of Raw in a fatal four way elimination match against The IIconics, Fire and Desire and The Kabuki Warriors. Alexa is currently in her second reign with Nikki as the Women’s Tag Team Champions on Raw

Fun Fact: Alexa has a pig as a pet.

The Revival

The first and currently only Triple Crown Tag Team is The Revival having won the Raw, Smackdown and NXT Tag Team Championships as a team. Dash and Dawson (as they were referred to as back then) would defeat the Vaudevillains Aiden English and Simon Gotch on the October 22nd 2015 edition of NXT, they would go on to have top quality feuds with American Alpha, #DIY and The Authors of Pain. After a few rocky years on the main roster The Revival would capture their first gold on Raw as they would defeat Bobby Roode and Chad Gable for the Raw Tag Team Championship on the February 11th 2019 edition of Raw. They would go on to claim the Smackdown Tag Team Championship at Clash of Champions 2019 for their only reign by defeating The New Day. They would drop the belts back to New Day a few months later and would start to publically tease they wanted out of the company. They would receive their release as part of what would be known as Black Wednesday by the fans as over 30 talents and employees were released by the company during the Covid 19 pandemic.

Fun Fact: Dash Wilder punched a “fan” at the Hall of Fame 2019 to a large ovation from the crowd during The Hart Foundations induction.

Drew McIntyre

After 11 years of being declared a future World Champions Drew accomplished his dream and in doing so became a Triple Crown Champion. Shortly after Drew debuted on Smackdown he would set his sights on the Intercontinental Championship. He defeated John Morrison at the TLC 2009 PPV and would hold it until Teddy Long suspended him in May 2010 and vacated the title. Mr McMahon would overrule this decision nullifying new champion Kofi Kingston’s reign and continuing Drews. He would lose the belt to Kofi at Over the Limit Pay Per View. He would next win the WWE Tag Team Championship but he won it a lot earlier than you may remember. Drew would team with Cody Rhodes to win a tag team turmoil match during the Night of Champions 2010 PPV entering last to defeat Mark Henry and Evan Bourne in a match also featuring The Hart Dynasty, The Usos and Santino Marella and Vladimir Kozlov. Drews career would go off course after this as he’d fall off the card, become a member of 3MB and eventually get fired. It would take years of working through the independent circuit, rebuilding himself in ICW and other promotions before returning to WWE through NXT becoming champion there, becoming a Raw Tag Team Champion with Dolph Ziggler before he finally earned his opportunity by winning the 2020 Royal Rumble. He would go on to beat The Beast Brock Lesnar at Wrestlemania 36 in 2020 unfortunately in an empty arena. Drew is the current WWE Champion on Raw.

Fun Fact: Drew stayed in the States to do a shot with 3MB rather than go to his mothers funeral.

Bonus Facts

For some reason the Universal Championship doesn’t count. If it did then Braun Strowman would be a Triple Crown Champion already.

If you could win each tag title individually then Chad Gable and Jason Jordan would be Tag Team Triple Crown Champions as they won the Raw Tag Team Titles with Bobby Roode and Seth Rollins respectively.
