Since CM Punk departed from WWE back in 2014, wrestling fans throughout the world have taken to social media about the fantasy booking of the former WWE Champion’s return to the ring. However, a comeback has not looked likely lately.
Although Punk has not been seen on an episode of Monday Night Raw or Friday Night SmackDown, fans feel that we are closer than ever to seeing him back inside a WWE ring. Especially considering he has been brought in as a co-host for WWE Backstage on FS1 last year.
Dave Meltzer was asked by WrestlingInc about the possibility of CM Punk returning to WWE. Meltzer alluded to the fact that Vince McMahon is not keen on the idea happening.
Here is what Meltzer had to say regarding CM Punk’s return:
“There is nothing irreparable when it comes to wrestling and when it comes to Vince, especially now. The more things go down, the more something like that becomes enticing. But then it’s also up to Punk and does he wanna wrestle? I know that Vince recently, as in a couple of months ago, was pretty adamant in that no, he wouldn’t bring him back. But he always changes his mind when it comes to things and as business gets worse, you’re looking for answers. There are no easy answers so you go to the hard ones and that’s a shot in the dark. How many times can they go back to Bill Goldberg? You know what I’m saying?”
With WWE’s ratings on a downward spiral Vince McMahon should be tempted to bring CM Punk back into the company. Cody from AEW has recently said that they were previously in talks with Punk making the move to WWE’s rival, however he was asking for an ‘astronomical amount of money’.
